: Baterial meningitis

The patient was started on intravenous
cefotaxime and dexamethasone. The repeated lumbar puncture on the second
day of admission ( 48 hours after starting the antibiotic) revealed :
protein 46 mg% sugar 89 mg% (blood sugar 137 mg%), WBC 3,720/cubic ml. (PMN 70%, Mono 30%). The fever subsided in 48 hours. |

The C.S.F. culture (first on day
1) grew Hemophilus influenzae not type b
Hemoculture : no growth The C.S.F. culture (second on day 2, after 24 hours of the antibiotic) : no growth |

Final
diagnosis : Hemophilus influenzae
not type b meningitis
